For the past week or so when I try to send the first message on T-bird it
fails to successfully do so. No error message. If I close T-bird and
restart it then it works properly. Once in a while there's no problem.

I've used T-bird for many years now with few problems.

Running on Windows XP.

TIA

One possible explanation is that the server uses the receive
before send authentification method, but Thunderbird is not set
up that way. I'm not even sure whether that setting still
exists.

Have you changed servers or changed the authenication settings?
Most mail servers nowadays use username and password
authentication, either encrypted or unencrypted with an
encrypted connection channel.
